“Making a decision to have a child–it’s momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart
go walking around outside your body.”     – Elizabeth Stone

Maternity portraits are such a wonderful way to document the part of your life where you’re carrying a another life inside you.

Some women opt to include their significant other in their maternity portrait session and that’s a fabulous idea! It gives you two a chance to relax and focus on each other during the session instead of talking about the nursery colors again 😉

The best time during your pregnancy to shoot your session is somewhere around the 7-8 month mark.  Every woman is different. Some women choose to do the session earlier, and some choose to wait until after the baby drops. It’s completely dependent on your comfort levels. You want to be close to giving birth but not so close that there’s risk of going into labor before you have a chance to do your session. You also don’t want to be physically uncomfortable during your session so most women tend to avoid shooting in their 9th month.

A common question I get asked is what to wear for the session. You will want to choose something that makes you feel beautiful and accentuates your baby bump. Don’t feel the need to show your bare belly if you aren’t comfortable with that. You can show off your bump just as easily in a dress or snug tank top. If you are comfortable with showing off your belly then you can use options like a button down shirt undone at your belly, cute lingerie, or one of the gorgeous lace maternity gowns that are so popular these days 🙂

Even if you’re feeling not so camera ready, or are self conscious about your baby bump, or whatever reason is holding you back from doing a maternity session, think about your child looking at those photos years down the road 🙂 Think about looking at those photos yourself and remembering the love and adoration you had for your yet-to-arrive baby while you still carried them. Even if it’s just a cell phone photo that you have printed at Walmart, take the photos 🙂 You will thank yourself for it later in life. Do you have other children in the family? Perfect! Involve them in your maternity session as well for some super cute pre-birth sibling photos 🙂
