I fell in love with Kara's hair as soon as I saw her and Owen get out of their car. There's just something about bold, bright colors that makes me happy. Kara & Owen were kind enough to agree to be my muses for the afternoon while I was testing out some new techniques and ideas, as well as a location that I haven't used for Nanaimo engagement photos before. I tend to do more shooting at Neck Point rather than Pipers Lagoon, mostly because I never pay attention to tide changes and I hate making clients climb over the big rocks at the end of the main path. It's well worth it to go explore that side of the park but it can be a bit of a pain if you have mobility issues or have a hard time with heights & climbing. However, Kara & Owen were totally fine with some climbing so we ended up doing most of our shoot on the far side of the park. It's so quiet & serene there...just you, trees, the ocean, and the occasional bird.
I'll admit that Kara threw me off a little bit when she said that they wanted something out of the box and not the usual cutesy, traditional poses that are typically seen in engagement photos. "Sure, no problem!" is what came out of my mouth but my brain was frantically running through every pose I'd ever directed, every engagement photo I'd ever shot and every Pinterest board I'd ever seen lol I decided to just go with it and do my thing. I had to focus hard on throwing myself out of my comfort zone to make sure that I gave them images that were not only interesting, but were true them as a couple, as well as staying within my usual style of shooting. I'd have to say that I was successful in achieving that! I got to play around with some awesome new poses and a new location and they got some awesome, playful engagement photos :) There were a lot of laughs to be had, despite some squinting, climbing tree forts and walking through some mucky sand (and almost losing a shoe!) All in all, it was a great afternoon with these two!
